What is the mission of Tiles?
Our mission is to build software that gives people greater agency, control, and choice in their digital lives. We believe that privacy adoption at scale must work backwards from preserving utility. This means negligible impact on user experience, model intelligence, throughput, latency, tool use & agentic capabilities, and web access.
How are funds used?
Funds are used to compensate contributors, cover infrastructure, and pay the administrative costs of running the company. We are not beholden to commercial interests or investor pressure: the work is paid for by the people who want it to exist. If you would like to help keep it going, you can sponsor Tiles or purchase a Tiles paid plan.
How are contributors compensated?
Contributors who have consistently demonstrated high-quality work and friendly behavior in the Tiles community may be invited to enter into a paid contributor contract.
Everyone on the team receives the same flat compensation, regardless of role. Contributors may voluntarily share part of their compensation back into the company pool; that money flows back into the runway, so it counts toward the net.
Contributors maintain full autonomy over when they work and which tasks they choose to pursue. By the time someone is offered a contract, they have already shown sound judgment about what meaningfully advances the project, and we trust them to continue using that judgment.
All contributor contracts are issued at the discretion of the project lead.
How is the project governed and licensed?
The project continues to follow a BDFL model, with Ankesh Bharti serving as the project lead and final authority on all decisions, including the direction of funds within the company (in accordance with the mission statement and legal requirements).
The project remains licensed under the MIT license, and the rights and permissions granted by that license remain unchanged.
